full steam ahead on lodge redevelopment

Work is well under way on the lodge redevelopment.

Scaffolding is complete and very complex due to our "interesting" building shape and steep site. Took 7 days to erect!

Some cladding is complete on the southern and western walls - looks great.

The roof will be replaced last as the builders are using it for access.
The latest design of the balcony floor is very good and should eliminate previous problems with leaking to the entry stairs below.
The original bedrooms had no wall insulation at all so we are going to see a great improvement with the super thick insulation bats that are going in as part of this project.
The new windows have already been installed in most of the bedrooms. The frames are metal on the outside, wood on the inside. The double glazing will meet new bushfire regulations and improve insulation.
The bench cushions in the lounge will be replaced with new leather cushions. A slight change in the cushion design should allow the base cushions to be a little wider/deeper and more comfortable.
We are taking the opportunity to run new cables for Internet and TV while the cladding is off.

Overall the building works are going great. The project is on budget and on schedule to be ready ahead of the snow season. Members should be very happy with the results.

Finance update

Members would no doubt be aware that the Club raised funds from the membership in 2010/2011 by way of a capital raising.
This enabled the Club to borrow significantly less that was originally forecast in the early planning of the lodge redevelopment.
The Club has entered into a loan agreement with Bendigo Bank for the provision of up to $300,000 to assist with the completion of the project.
The Loan is secured by the asset at Falls Creek and there is no recourse to members or guarantees by the Committee.
It is anticipated that the funds will be drawn down gradually during early 2012.
Bendigo Bank was chosen as their package was the most Club friendly of the three proposals we received.
We were delighted to have secured funding for the project as this allowed the Committee to authorise that works commence on site.

During 2011, the Club incurred significant costs related to the preparatory stage of the Lodge redevelopment. These costs will be expensed in the accounts for 2011 which will result in the Club reporting a Loss for the year.
However, the Committee has decided to capitalise the new works into the balance sheet and thus the majority of the capital funds committed to the project will result in an increase in the net worth of the Club.
Our cash flow projections for the next seven years, see us substantially paying down the loan from the Bank.
As Treasurer, I am hopeful of good seasons ahead that will increase patronage, and therefore shorten the life of the loan.

May I remind Members that subscriptions are due in the New Year. Remember that $50.00 accommodation vouchers are available to Full Members who pay by 15th January 2012.

Merlin Entertainments Group has made a takeover bid for Living and Leisure Australia, which includes Falls Creek. Merlin is UK based and is the world’s second largest visitor attraction operator.

Attractions under development in the region – both of which are planned to open in 2012 – are a major LEGOLAND theme park in Malaysia and a Madame Tussauds in Sydney.

There is sometimes some confusion about making weekend bookings

The booking policy for weekends (other than Opening Weekend and Race Weekend) is that a booking cannot be made until
    Members 19 days prior (Monday)
    AAC reciprocal 16 days prior (Thursday)
    Guests 15 days prior (Friday)

However, there is no need to wait till these times to submit booking forms. In fact early submission of weekend booking requests makes it it easier for the booking officer to manage bookings and room allocation. In return you will often get an early indication of whether your weekend booking request is likely to be successful. Firm confirmation of weekend bookings will not be made till the official times noted above.

When you receive your booking confirmation slip, it includes a provisional room allocation. It is important to note that this allocation is subject to change. E.g. this may be to cater for extended stays, special needs of guests, later bookings or maintenance issues. You should always check the whiteboard on arrival for correct room allocation.

Yackandandah Creek bridge reopened
If you travel to Falls Creek via Albury/Wodonga you will be very pleased to hear that the new bridge has been completed and the Kiewa Valley Highway reopened shortly before Christmas. No more long detour north of Kiewa!

The bridge was seriously damaged by flash flooding about 12 months ago and had to be replaced. The highway has been closed since.

Be aware that there are still some speed restrictions in place.

new brewery premises in Mt Beauty
You may have already enjoyed a drop of the local Sweetwater beer at Falls or in Mt Beauty. Previously located at Annapurna winery, Sweetwater has now relocated to new premises on the Kiewa Valley Hwy in Tawonga South, directly opposite the Mt Beauty Holiday Centre (that's the caravan park).

The owner and brewer is a keen skier, you've probably seen him zipping around the resort on his tele skis. He's also a very keen fisherman. At this stage he's open Fri, Sat & Sun evenings for beer & snacks if you are looking for a refreshing ale when you are in the valley.

If you haven't ordered your the Hero Pass for 2012, don't leave it too late. The offer closes on 10 October - this coming Monday. The lift company is a bit worried that their website might not cope if too many people wait till Monday, so don't leave it till the last minute.

In case you haven't heard about the Hero Pass, it's a Falls Creek/Hotham Season Pass for only $699 (that's $500 less than the 2011 early bird pass). You pay $199 by 10 October and another $500 by 1 May 2012. Hero Passes for children and seniors are $99 now and $300 by 1 May. Lease granted

In June we received in principle approval for our lodge redevelopment proposal. This meant that our proposal met the requirements for lease renewal. We did not know the term of the new lease.

The Board of Falls Creek Resort Management has now offered us a 50 year lease, which the club has accepted. This is an excellent outcome.

We are currently seeking tenders for the building work. Tender responses are due soon.

At this stage, we do not expect the lodge to be available for bookings over the coming summer & autumn. This will be confirmed once we have selected a builder and established the building schedule.

Thanks to all members of the committee and building subcommittee and especially to Nigel Cowie, Lodge Supervisor, for their efforts on this major project.

That's the season that was - 2011

Season 2011 is over. It started with great promise and July had fantastic snow for those lucky enough to be up there then. Then it just sort of gradually faded away, before ending with a last flurry of snowflakes on closing weekend. Wombats and Main street were open for Queens Birthday Weekend, and Main Street was still going till the last day. Mother nature may have been fickle but snowmaking delivered and kept us skiing and boarding at Falls Creek after Hotham and Buller closed a week early.

Our new managers Andrew & Myra did a great job.

We had a new transport system with great new vehicles. Most customers seemed to think it worked well most of the time.

Steve Lee's backcountry tours were a hit with at least one group of AAC members and guests who had a fabulous trip out to McKay.

Ross was again triumphant in the club race, with Vivienne taking out the wonen's race and Carla the children's.

On Hoppet day we had 3 competitors with John again winning his age group in the Joey event.

The unfavourable economic climate and the sparse snowfalls meant that numbers on the slopes were down, but AAC and other clubs still had quite a good year. We can only infer that even in doubtful economic times, we will still flock to the slopes if we can get good value. It seems that most lift companies around Australia are reaching the same conclusion as they have announced some very attractive early bird season passes. Falls' and Hotham's Hero Pass for $699 is a great deal but you need to act fast - offer closes 10 October.

serving on the committee

A club like AAC Falls Creek depends for its success on its members and their contribution to the club. One important way of helping the club is by serving on the committee. Some of the existing committee members have signalled that they would like to retire or step back into less demanding roles by the next AGM. Elections at the AGM are for general committee members, with specific roles being determined at the first committee meeting after the AGM.

The committee would welcome interest from any potential new committee members. Roles that are likely to be required include

$699 adult season pass for next year

Great news. The lift company have announced a fabulous deal on season passes for next year. They are calling it the Hero Pass. It's $500 less than this season's early bird deal.

Pay $199 before 10 October and $500 by 1st May 2012: $699 total cost for a full adult season pass that is valid for Falls and Hotham. Children and secondary students $399.

Perisher and Thredbo announced offers last week, so it's great to see Falls offering a similar early bird deal.

Capital Raising for Lodge redevelopment success

Thanks to all the many Debenture holding members and even some Juniors who provided "up front" payments to the capital raising to finance the redevelopment of the Lodge.
We had a strong response as you will have seen from the Annual report.
For those that chose to pay by instalment, the second payment was due in May. If you have not made your payment for that instalment, a reminder notice will soon arrive.
We are now completing a 100% check of all payments and a statement will be sent to all members with their capital payments made and also a guide to future payments, for those paying by instalment.
There are a small number of members, mainly juniors, that will see that their future payments increase over time. This is probably due to movement into more senior membership categories.
The next round of instalments for the capital raising will be in the next subscription invoice round, which will be issued in November for payment in January 2012.

Spring seems to have arrived a bit early. International may be closed, and summit looking pretty sad, but the skiing over the back is still very good. The south facing slopes are holding snow very well and there is still excellent cover.

Race weekend report

The annual club race was held on Father Fosters race course on Saturday 6th August.

Conditions were truly awful but a valiant brigade turned up to race, along with an equally courageous crew from Riverina Ski Club. A few centimetres of fresh wet snow over a soft rain affected base made for heavy work inspecting the course. Generous salting turned it into a rather narrow icy track. There were a few spills, including yours truly, but most survived to take their second run.

Despite the poor conditions, everyone was in good spirits and there were smiles all around as people completed the course. An added touch of humour came from the misreading of names by the course announcer, coupled with some people racing in numbers originally assigned to others. So David Stogdale, racing in Noel Poon's number was announced as Noah (seemed appropriate given the weather). But perhaps best of all was Rose Baker for our champion Ross Barker.

Andrew & Myra were joined by some scouting friends to put on a fabulous spread for dinner. In particular, Watson won lots of friends with his lemon tart, vanilla cheesecake and chocolate hazelnut gateau. Thanks for a great dinner!

Thanks also to Nigel for stepping into John Cameron's shoes for the weekend to organise bibs, results etc.

It's not too late to book in for Race Weekend - there are still a few rooms available for this special club weekend.

Race Weekend is not just for experienced racers, it's a fun weekend for all members.

The race is designed to be fun for kids and intermediates as well as the experts. You can ski or board, and maybe we might even see some telemark skis this year. Racing happens first thing on Saturday morning, with course inspection followed by 2 runs each. The rest of the weekend is available for free skiing. Dinner is provided on Saturday night and it's a great social time with everyone seated at one long table. There are awards for children under 13 and for grownups and a few fun awards.

It's a great opportunity to get to know other members better, challenge yourself in a friendly race and enjoy a great night in the lodge. If you haven't tried it, give it a go this year.

The last 2 days have been blue sky and cold dry snow with great skiing on the groomers and off-piste. Summit opened part-way through the day. It looked like they were working on getting International going too.

big changes to village transport this season

Falls Creek Resort Management will now be running the service previously provided by "Oversnow".

They have purchased a fleet of 6 Prinoth Husky vehicles, 5 of which carry passengers and one for luggage and freight only. These tracked vehicles will be used to provide transfer of guests and their luggage to/from lodges as well as provide the village shuttle service. As well as improved comfort, these vehicles will inflict less wear and tear on the snow on the village roads. 2 of the vehicles will also be able to groom village roads. Other vehicles may be used at peak demand times too.

The new vehicles will go into service in the next week or so. In the meantime, village roads are being kept clear where possible. An interim over snow service will be provided if required.

Other changes

Price has decreased
You can buy your accommodation transfer tickets when you buy your resort entry, at the gate or in sub-alpine outlets.
You can "split the ride" and send one person with all the luggage.
Luggage rate is $2.50 per item. (Normal fare includes 2 pieces of luggage, one pair skis/board with boots and one hand luggage)
You can purchase large Transit Bags ($2 each) to put smaller bags into so that luggage charge is minimised.

major milestone for lodge redevelopment

Fantastic news!

Our lodge redevelopment proposal has received approval in principle from Falls Creek Resort Management.

As you are no doubt aware we need to undertake significant works to secure a lease renewal. These need to address mandatory standards such as building code and bushfire requirements. Our proposed works to address these are seen as appropriate and we can now progress to seeking formal planning approval. The formal lease approval process will still take several months to complete.

Special thanks to Nigel Cowie, David Stogdale, the members of the building sub-committee and everyone else who has worked so hard on this project

Skiing on opening weekend! Thanks to snowfalls and good snowmaking conditions in the week before Queen's Birthday weekend, Main Street and Wombats ramble were open for an early season ski. The snowmakers did a great job getting these runs in great condition with only limited help from mother nature.

Participants were busy with a host of tasks to get the lodge ready for another season, including:

install new system to get digital TV (analog is no longer available in North East Vic)
install new sound systems in the dining room and games room
install new closed circuit tv to monitor the games room
replace faulty appliances in kitchen and manager's flat
many other cleaning, maintenance, stocktaking and documentation tasks

No XC Trail Fees at Falls in 2011

Resort Management have decided to drop cross country trail fees this year. This is a great opportunity to beg, borrow or hire some xc gear and get out on the trails to see the other side of Falls Creek. The trails in the area between the nordic bowl and wombats ramble are quite sheltered and are a great option on bad weather days. Or take a picnic lunch and explore a bit further afield on a sunny day away from lift queues.

Boali Lodge Thredbo - rate clarification

The AAC booking sheet says "AAC at club member rates" for Boali Lodge at Thredbo. Unfortunately this is not quite correct. It should in fact read "Member guest rates", which is essentially a 60% reduction of their commercial rates.

Capital raising - status

On behalf of the Committee I would like to thank the many members that have embraced the discounted capital raising offer and paid $1,500 by December 2010 instead of the lengthy instalment programme.

Over 60% of members paid the $1,500 offered as a once off payment for their contribution to the Capital raising.

In addition, a number of junior members and also some Life members contributed to the capital raising.

As a result of the payments received, the Club's cash reserves are now much higher than was anticipated. This will add significantly to our ability to earn interest while we finalise the building works plan and also in the preparation of additional funding to complete the project.

For those that have chosen to pay by instalment, the next invoice for the current payment will be arriving in early April for payment in May 2011.

As Treasurer I shall give a report in detail of the financial position regarding the lodge redevelopment and also in general terms at the Club AGM on 24th May at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club.

Building Sub Committee Report

March 2011

Since the 2010 AGM your Building Sub Committee has been busy working on the lodge redevelopment works.
We have held 6 Sub Committee Meetings discussing issues ranging from replacement of the roof to the total scope of works for the project. Some important outcomes to date are:

Michael McKenna (Architect and Club Member) has been appointed by the Sub and General Committees to continue the work started by Salter Architects. Michael’s family currently reside at Falls Creek so we are lucky to have Michael visiting Falls Creek almost every weekend.
The Sub Committee considered replacing of the roof prior to this ski season as a separate exercise to the main building works. Tenders were sought but the only complying tenders received from builders contained in excess of $40,000 of scaffolding. This scaffolding would be duplicated in the main works so it would effectively be wasted money. It was therefore decided to defer the roof replacement and include it with the main works.
A Scope of Works was agreed by the Sub Committee and the Main Committee on 8/3/11. These Scope of Works are currently being incorporated into a draft lease application document which will be presented to Falls Creek Resort Management (FCRM) in April 2011. It is hoped that we will have positive feedback from FCRM, confirmed Scope of Works, and a proposed building schedule to present to the AGM in May 2011.

3 Peaks Challenge - 13 March

Sunday 13th March is the 3 Peaks cycling challenge. Riders set off from Falls Creek from 6:45am for the 235km loop over Tawonga Gap, up Mt Hotham then along the Omeo Highway and back to Falls. Full details at Bicycle Victoria website

Once again AAC Falls Creek will host riders in the event.

If you are visiting Falls Creek or surrounding areas this weekend, be aware of road closures for the event, in particular, the road from Mt Beauty to Falls will be closed from 5:30am - 9am.

Triathlon weekend

AAC Falls Creek had visitors of a very different nature over the weekend of 12/13 February.

Supporting the 2XU Falls Creek Triathlon were a contingent of twenty four lifesavers from Elwood and Brighton Life Saving Clubs.

They arrived with six IRB’s and Rescue Boards on Saturday afternoon, setting up their equipment in the flat ground in front of Bogong Ski Club and the play ground.

Very early Sunday morning they had their work cut out, setting the swim course and providing water safety for the six hundred or so swimmers entering the water to complete the 1.8Km course in Rocky Valley Dam.

The Lodge also hosted the competitor video making production team.

The next major event at the lodge will be the THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE over the March long weekend.

Falls Creek Triathlon

This weekend is the inaugural Falls Creek Triathlon which is also the Victorian Long Course Triathlon Championship.This is a major event with more than 500 competitors. There will also be a number of running events on the trails near the nordic bowl and aqueduct.

AAC Falls Creek will host a contingent from Elwood Life Saving Club who are supporting the triathlon.

If you will be at Falls on the weekend, be aware that will be restrictions on vehicles in the village. There will also be road closures including the boat ramp area and BHP road on and past the dam.

Lodge development charge - clarification

The Lodge development charge is an adjunct charge to the subscription. It is separated out of the overall fee as we wish to identify some funds for yearly maintenance on the Lodge.
The fee is charged to full members and thus with about 200 or so of these members it raises about $9000.
We spend all of that and usually more on local and minor works at the Lodge each year. In recent times we have spent $30,000 in one year on minor works. Thus the levy does not necessarily cover all of the maintenance issues, but that is the $ level we have struck and it has been at this rate for several years.

Other categories of membership are not levied this charge, only full (senior, not junior) members are charged.

On the other hand, the capital raising is a capital injection and is being applied to all categories of membership. All members regardless of their situation are paying their share of the capital to make a significant redevelopment of the Lodge for the future.

Village roads have been cleared

On Monday FCRM cleared the village roads because there was really not enough snow to get around on.

The same arrangements will be place for drop off and pick up as those that applied earlier in the season. You can get a 30 min pass to drive the lodge and load/unload. Depending on conditions, you may be required to fit chains. Roads may be icy, so be careful driving and walking around the village.

There are still 2 sets of traffic lights where the road is reduced to one way (near Clover Dam and just below Turnback) and you should be cautious throughout the drive.

Falls Creek Rd Daylight Hours Only

The Falls Creek road will be closed at 6pm every night until further notice.FCRM have provided the following advice:

The Victorian Police and VicRoads have directed that the Bogong High Plains Road between Falls Creek and Mount Beauty will be closed between 6pm and 7.30am each night for the immediate future.

Many of you have likely witnessed the numerous landslides and fallen trees along the Bogong High Plains Road to Mount Beauty resulting from the recent severe weather.
While there has been a considerable cooperative effort among many agencies to reopen the road, there still remains areas of some risk due to landslides and trees that are in imminent danger of falling.
VicRoads has determined that the risks posed by these areas are manageable during daylight hours. They have determined however, that the risk is unacceptable during the night due to restricted vision.
The road between Falls Creek and Mount Beauty will therefore be closed at 6pm every night. Cars must leave the resort by 545pm to ensure this occurs. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
This is a decision made exclusively by Vic Police advised by a qualified VicRoads assessor.

Road Closures due to Severe Weather

The extraordinary weather over the last few days has affected access to Falls Creek. In particular, there have been some landslips on the road from Mt Beauty to Falls Creek and the road was closed for much of Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday afternoon there were escorted convoys to allow traffic on and off the mountain. The road is now closed again and the following advice has been provided by FCRM.

As at 610pm Sunday September 5
Due to severe weather conditions and as a precautionary measure to travellers , the Bogong High Plains Road has been closed to all traffic by Victoria Police.

Escorted vehicles were allowed outbound and inbound access to the resort, but it is expected the road will again be closed to general traffic until re assessment on the morning of Monday September 6.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANY UN-ESCORTED TRAVEL OCCUR ON THE BOGONG HIGH PLAINS ROAD UNTIL THE ROAD IS OFFICIALLY OPEN. YOU WILL FACE FINES IF THIS OCCURS.

It is suggested any travellers in transit arrange accommodation in Mt Beauty or stay in Falls Creek overnight. If there is any change to these circumstances, you will be notified as soon as Resort Management is made aware.

There are also road closures on access roads to Mt Beauty. Specific details change as water levels rise and fall in different places. Access to and from Mt Beauty has been possible, given some route planning to avoid the closures. Vic Roads is updating its road closure bulletin several times a day. sled dog race - village road closures

There will be a sled dog race in the village on Tuesday night 17th August. It should be a great spectacle, but it will impact on village access and parking.

Half of the Slalom North carpark will be roped off from Sunday night.

On Tuesday night the course must be free of all traffic including pedestrians, from approx 7pm to 8pm. If you are planning to go out on Tuesday night, be aware that some roads will be cordoned off.

The race course will be:
1. From bottom of Falls Express, up Wombats Ramble and right onto Pretty Valley Road,
2. Across Pretty Valley Road to the top of Ory's Trail,
3. Down Ory's trail (past the Brown Tank) and entering the village at Frueauf,
4. Down Schuss Street taking a right onto Slalom Street in front of Julian's,
5. Down Slalom Street and back into Slalom Plaza.

When there are no race teams approaching Marshalls will permit traffic through the cordoned off intersections. However, the Marshalls will remove all traffic from the race course when race teams are approaching.

FCRM also warn that the dogs are not the patting kind.

Snow at last

About a foot of snow fell during the week, making a huge difference to Falls. The village is now ski-in/ski-out with oversnow in operation. The home trails are skiable, although marginal in places. Ruined Castle was officially open before the snowfall, but is now providing some really nice skiing. Scotties is "interesting" for access. It looks as though another decent fall will get Highway 83 open and make Scotties more than an access trail.

Village Shuttles

FCRM are reminding us that the shuttle service can not be relied on to get everyone around the village.

The intra-village shuttle service is primarily provided for the elderly, immobile, young children and novice skiers and boarders. As we have limited capacity to provide the intra-village shuttle service we strongly encourage ... guests ...to ski to and from their accommodation.

When night skiing is on, there is an extended intra-village shuttle service until ~20 minutes after the lift closes. Once again FCRM are advising that it can't be relied on for general getting around the village:

There are, of course, a limited number of shuttles we can provide during the evening service and this has meant that during the busiest periods the demand is greater than the supply. While we are more than happy to continue to provide the service to whomever is seeking the transport, in future when there is a build up of guests waiting for transport at shuttle stops we will request that priority be given to:
- Skiers and boarders returning from night skiing,
- The elderly and immobile, and
- Very young children.

XC ski trails

After this week's snowfall there is finally enough snow to get the xc trails groomed. So far, approx 25km of trails are groomed and open, including BHP to Watchbed Creek and the McKay loop. Trail fees are being charged.

Parking for Late Night Arrivals

FCRM have made some changes for guests arriving after normal hours of operation.

There is now a late night parking area on the low side of Falls Creek Oversnow. If you arrive after the car-parking staff have finished, you can park in this sign posted overnight car parking area without fear of getting a ticket. You must get a resort entry pass first thing the next morning from the new Visitor Info Hub in St Falls West.

Parking and Village Transport

The village roads be closed to ordinary traffic from 12 noon today. After that, vehicles will only be allowed into the village for drop-off and pickup or if they have an authorised vehicle pass.

Slalom St will be closed at Wombats Ramble. From the lower end of Slalom St, you can only drive to Les Chalet / High Plains / Snowgum Lane. For all other parts of the village, vehicle access is via Falls Creek Road.

While the village roads are clear, guests can drive into the village to drop off and pick-up luggage, according this procedure:
From FCRM

Guests arriving or departing the village will be granted a 30 minute pass into the village to unload/load their passengers and luggage. The process for guest arrival and departure will be:
Arriving guests will be met by an FCRM staff member at the Falls Creek Road intersection and will receive a 30 minute pass into the village to unload their passengers and luggage.
When unloaded the guest will drive back to BHP Road and wait for the FCRM car parking shuttle outside the Oversnow Terminal, which will escort them to a car park.
The guest will then be transported back to their accommodation in the FCRM shuttle.
When departing the guest should make their way to BHP Road and wait for a car parking shuttle outside the Oversnow Terminal.
The car parking shuttle will then transport the guest to their car.
The guest will then be granted a 30 minute pass into the village to collect their passengers and luggage.

Parking restrictions apply to all vehicles in the village throughout the season and will enforced. Please do not park in No Standing zones, including in front of fire hydrants or in emergency vehicles zones (defined by unbroken yellow lines down one side of the road). It is essential for emergency response that emergency management vehicles have uninhibited access throughout the village and access to fire fighting infrastructure.

The car parking service will operate from today. However, there will not be an intra-village shuttle for the Opening Weekend. Guests or residents with special transport requirements can contact FCRM to arrange transport throughout the village.

The Bogong High Plains Road past Falls Creek is now closed until after the snow season. There is no access to Omeo across the Bogong High Plains.

Capital Raising for Lodge Renovation

At the recent AAC Falls Creek AGM, there was a Motion regarding Capital raising. The issue is related to the forthcoming Lease renewal and required works to improve the outside of the lodge to current standards. The majority of members who attended arrived early for the special presentation on the reasons and background of how the committee arrived at the need to raise capital.

The committee had taken email and phone queries prior to the meeting as well as responding to active discussions at the meeting. 53 members voted in person and by proxy and the motion to raise the funds was approved.

Subsequently a second motion to form a subcommittee to advise the committee on the detailed plans and implementation of the building works was moved and passed. A number of volunteers have already advised that they are able to assist on this subcommittee and any interested member is welcome to put forward their services. (please send an email to aacfallscreek@gmail.com if you wish to assist).

A subset of the presentation material will be available on the public web site for those who couldn't attend the AGM.

This forms a key milestone for the club as we prepare to extend the life of the lodge by 30-40 years and ensure that the lease and lodge are available for the next generation of skiers.

Falls Creek Gym - new location

New Visitor Info Centre

Resort Management are setting up a more accessible visitor info centre. It will be known as the Falls Creek Visitor Information Centre Hub. It will be operating in an office directly outside Foodworks, beginning Queens Birthday weekend. Opening hours are 8am – 5pm 7 days a week.

It will look after all guests related enquiries including

cross country (seasonal pass) ticketing
gymnasium passes
information on resort services,
general guest related enquires
infringement payments.

Other resort admin functions will still be performed in the old office.

Summer Associate Membership of Falls Creek Huette

As our organisation’s philosophy is 'affordable accommodation for families' to enjoy winter sports and the Australian Alps the Committee is always looking to expand Lodge utilisation.

To increase utilisation of the Lodge over summer, the Club has introduced a ‘Summer Associate Membership’ which will allow more winter guests and non-members to experience the Lodge.

A Summer Associate only has booking rights at AAC Falls Creek during the summer months and has no voting rights or reciprocal rights with any other AAC Lodge.

As we are a part of the Falls Creek and Alpine community, there are a number of other groups who have expressed a desire to support the Falls Creek community and we should support them. An example is a conservation group, who have plans to use volunteer labour to remove weeds from the Alpine National Park. The Committee have agreed that supporting groups like this and other sporting groups to enjoy the National Park over summer, can best be managed by the 'Summer Associate Membership' of Falls Creek Huette.

Resort Entry Season Passes

Early bird Falls Creek resort entry passes save about 15%, but you need to buy before 30th April. Day entry this year will be $32, so you would break even on an early bird pass on the 8th day.

If you purchase online from Fall's Creek online agent, there is a competition to win $800 worth of Ripcurl ski clothes and accessories. Alternatively you can download a form and fax or mail it.

Falls Creek have published their season pass prices. The early bird pass will be a "Super Pass" that includes Perisher (as well as Hotham).

If you buy your pass before 27 May, the prices are
$1,149 for adults
$649 for children aged 6yrs – Year 12 and for adults aged 65+

(There seems to be discrepancy with the child ticket age cut-off, so it might be worth checking with the lift company. Hotham website says full time secondary students to 18 can get the child super pass)

After that date, Perisher is not included. Full price season passes will be

$790 children & secondary students
$799 full time tertiary students
$700 seniors 65-69

Season 6 Passes (no Saturdays)

March Long Weekend - No private cars in village

The village will be very busy with the 3 Peaks cycle race.

Resort Management have decided to restrict car parking in the village from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th. Only Authorised Vehicle Permit holders will be allowed to park within the Village. Vehicles without an authorized permit will be issued with an Infringement Notice. (Permits will only be granted to the nominated vehicles of business owners and permanent residents.)

PARKING PROCESS
All visitors that arrive will be greeted at Falls Creek Road intersection
Drivers will be given a temporary pass which allows them 30 minutes of access time into the village to deliver passengers and luggage.
All drivers must then return to Falls Creek Road Intersection where they will be greeted by a transporter and directed to an allocated car park.
Transporters will then chauffer drivers back to their accommodation in the village if desired.
CAR COLLECTION - For the collection of vehicles upon leaving the mountain
Drivers will be chauffeured to the car park from a bus stop and drivers will again be able to drive their vehicles to their accommodation to pick up luggage and passengers
Where possible drivers are encouraged to walk to their vehicles for collection.
Please note, this service will only be available until Monday 8th March until 4pm.
FREE VILLAGE SHUTTLE
A free village shuttle will operate throughout the village during the weekend to shuttle pedestrians that are mobility impaired or unable to walk. This shuttle will operate on a set route at a very slow speed and visitors are encouraged to wait at designated bus stops.

Top Coat for Bogong High Plains Road

The Bogong High Plains road from Falls Creek to the Omeo Highway was sealed last summer, but it was always intended to follow that up with a second seal this year.

From the Alpine Shire website

The Bogong High Plains Road will receive its final seal starting on Wednesday, 24 February. The work is expected to take more than a week.

Alpine Shire Council's Manager Strategic Services, John Carter said the final seal and guard rail will be installed to complete the road sealing project.

"It is expected there will be minor delays while the work is in progress and the surface will be vacuumed of loose stones at the same time," Mr Carter said.

"This will be welcomed by all the road users. The unique Alpine loop that can be enjoyed by car tourers, motorcyclists and road cyclists alike is already proving popular.

The sealed road makes the Hotham - Falls Creek loop accessible to drivers who prefer to avoid dirt roads. It's a great day trip of about 225km.

The Bogong High Plains road will still be closed during the snow season

CODE RED for North East on Tuesday 12 Jan

Tuesday 12th Jan has been declared a Code Red (Catastrophic) fire danger rating for the North East Fire District, which includes Falls Creek. The Government's advice on such days is that "If you live in a bushfire prone area the safest option is to leave the night before, or early in the morning".

Parks Victoria and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) advise that all national and state parks and forests in the North Country and the North East will be closed tomorrow in the interest of public safety.

“Many of our parks are large, open landscapes surrounding roads and towns, so access cannot be prevented. We can only stress the intense level of fire risk in these bushland areas and close visitor sites wherever possible,” ...

Those who are already in a park or forest area are advised the safest option is to leave tonight or early tomorrow morning. Bushfires which start on a day of CODE RED Fire Danger Rating may be uncontrollable, unpredictable and move quickly.

Parks Victoria and DSE encourage visitors already in these areas to contact the local Visitor Information Centre to find out about alternative tourism opportunities in lower risk areas.

mountain muster - mingle with the other club lodges

The Falls Creek Alpine Association is organising The Mountain Muster on 16-17th January, the same weekend as Taste of Falls Creek.

It kicks off on Saturday night with a meeting/dinner at the Myrtleford Ski Club (Falls Creek) commencing at 5pm. The guest speaker will be Chris Derrick, General Manager Operations, FCRM.

The meeting will be followed by a BYO meat/salads BBQ. Wine will be provided.

On Sunday you can join the lodge walk-about. It will commence at 10.00 am at Carey Alpine Club. It's a rare opportunity to look through participating flats/lodges.

We're not sure where Pete the Snow Dragon hides during the summer months at Falls Creek, but his friend Samara Tanton spends her time in Niseko's Hanazono resort with 'Kamonohasi' (the ninja platypus). You can watch a video here.
